Victor - check out this link for my bear bag kit: http://www.brettonstuff.com/index.php/backpacking/my-bear-bagging-kit/

For the hauling / food-bag, I simply use my emptied out backpack.

Thanks for the site. Lots of great advice. I like the reference to the PCT food hanging method but notice that you haven't list anything about your food bag/storage. Maybe I miss it?

Where did you get the cool 3-d views of the topo maps? That's a really nice way to get a view of the terrain. I'm imagining a tool where you can zoom in/out change "camera" position in 3 axes?

We're looking at the Pasayten in a few weeks, your site has been really helpful. Plus, I'd really like to do the ultralight thing, if I can convince my 4 hiking buddies not to just "split the bill" on the total weight at the trailhead.

Thanks!

Brett, do you have the GPS waypoints for your WT campsites? I'm staying at most of the ones that you listed but have been unable to locate GPS coordinates. Going in 2 weeks.
Thanks!

Hi Brett,

I will post some pics this weekend. We had phenomenal weather. No rain for 5 weeks before our trip and no rain during. If it was really wet I would consider bailing at Nitinat going N to S. I'm 55 with a G2 knee brace so slick boardwalks and submerged roots aren't that appealing!

We hope to do it again next year with my kids. Hopefully my pack weight will go from 45 lbs (2L of water) to 30 lbs.

The speed record was just broken by Gary Robbins from North Vnacouver - 10 hrs 8 min. i know it is legit as he is my hygienist's trainer. http://garyrobbins.blogspot.com

You would need almost perfect weather and low tides to maximize your beach running.

Cheers, Peter

Hi Brett,

We just finished the West Coast Trail (my first multi night hike - I'm a kayaker) and the Neoairs were wonderful, warm and the most comfortable pad I've used! No problem with noise. We found them more 'form fitting' when slightly under inflated.
They looked delicate but seemed quite robust but I brought some repair patches just in case.

We used your gear list as a guide for our hike. No where close to your UL weight but still a big help. We'll be much lighter next time!

Cheers, Peter

- not fast rule for dividing weight. we generally carry all our own personal items and then divide up the shared stuff. i take the heavies like the tent, stove etc to balance it out.
- umbrellas are not essential, and i wouldn't recommend experimenting on a long-trip without backup waterproofs for your first time. takes a bit to learn to love them - but there's no going back for me.
- yeah - just a bit of duct tape - i've never used a whole roll and only run out of it once (bad blister trip)
- we use this gear list for mix terrains. sometimes up above tree line, sometimes lower valleys.

We love your lists and ideas - we are about to set off on the GR 20 route in Corsica - France with all lite-gear having followed your gear list and recommendations.

Quick questions
How do you both divide up the weight ? Is it done in ratio to body weight or do you just carry a bit more than Teresa?

Are umbrellas each essential if you have good waterproof clothing? We thought we'd take one to protect stove for cooking .

Did i understand right that you wind duct tape around your hiking poles rather than take the whole roll?

We're not taking mosquito nets as walking at altitude - Is your original gear list for high terrain or low level walking? That would obviously mean slightly differing gear?

Thanks again and good luck with no. 2 on the way!

fed,

thanks for the ideas. yeah, i do have a neoair - haven't updated my list for a while :) - and i usually take my light summer bag. theresa however likes the winter bag as she likes to be over-warm at night. small price to pay to get her out in the wild :)

the murmer pack looks awesome too.

happy trails!
