hey nick,

check out the options settings. goto Tools|Options > Plug-ins | Polaroid Picture Options and you will see in the General Tab you can change the background image to anything you like.

Hope this helps.
Cheers,

Hi Brett,

Thanks for the work on the plugin and making it public.

What I'm actually trying to do is use the plugin as an easy way to add captions to photos. Is there any way therefore to either adjust the colour of the polaroid from white to black (or a colour of one's choosing), or even transparent. I've tried fudging the padding but can't quite get it, and I can't be arsed making a table each time myself for photo, caption, I'm just lazy!

Any help appreciated, though I'm asking a lot.

Cheers matey,
Nick

Brett,
I have been getting back into backpacking after having kids. I replaced most of my gear with newer lighter stuff. I like your blog because we both hike in the same climate. I did the west coast trail in the mid 90's. First hiked Rainier in the 60's in Boy Scouts. I love Copper Ridge. My favorite place to hike has always been the Olympics. You and your mates should check out the Robert L. Woods book and do a cross country trip like upper Lena lake to home sweet home. There is also a short stretch of beach from Oil City to Third Beach which is cool.
I am a big fan of Feathered Friends which is a Seattle company which has great gear.
Kids grow fast so enjoy them while you can.

Hike on,
John

Yeah - they stopped making them.

I'm getting a lot of good mileage out of Salomon trail runners still. Super-comfy, but there are lighter options:

I keep hearing about toothpaste and weight. We have used Eco-Dent for years, both home and travel. It's a powder, comes in a 2 oz plastic bottle, and you get about 200 brushings per bottle. It runs $5 to $8 and comes in cinnamon, mint and a couple other flavors, at most health food stores, online and a few other stores. The bottle is nice, so I usually just take a 1/4 filled bottle, until I find a smaller bottle I like as much.

Hey Brian,

The Jam wouldn't be my first choice today (they are heavier these day - see here) - although still way better than your Mountain Smith (I have one of those kicking around in my attic too :)) Looks like the Jam holds ~ 50L.

I need to update my gear list one of these days - My current pack is the ULA CDT (http://www.ula-equipment.com/cdt.asp) - which I LOVE - but it's quite a bit smaller than the Jam.

Good luck lightening your load!

Brett,

Just stumbled across your site. I have been backpacking for a couple years and am finally starting to realize I need to downsize (weight wise). What is the capacity on these jam packs? They have a couple different sizes now although all of them are way lighter than the Mountain Smith I am lugging around now.

Thanks,

sorry for late reply - email notification of comments aren't working and not checking often. ping me at brettm - gmail - com for a faster reply :)

as you drop into the hanegan basin after the pass, you'll cross the headwaters of the chilliwack - last place for water for a while unless you want to side-trip to egg lake. there is (was a few weeks ago) snow around selesia you could melt in a pinch. 2L should be plenty to copper.

be aware that you might not get your first-pick of camps - so be flexible to maybe end up doing it backwards etc.

re: the side-trip up bush-creek. added a day of so. my route was:

day 1: hannegan trailhead -> graybeal
day 2: graybeal -> whatcom pass -> taptao lakes -> indian camp
day 3: indian -> silesia
day 4: silesia -> out.

have fun - let me know how it goes.

Thanks Brett - Another idea is to get the CDT for my ultralite setup and use the Flashpack for my early season "heavier" loads. I'm off to do the Copper Ridge Loop on Sunday and my base weight is 11.5lbs. I'm going to do it in 3 days as well.

i actually hike with these little gaiters on almost every trip these days - beach or not. they weight next to nothing and stop any crud entering the tops of my shoes. personally, i'd bring them on a beach hike. sand gets everywhere.

the jam is a great pack still, but not the absolute lightest. i think more important is what fits well first, then weight second. if you like the jam - go for it!

Hi Brett - I did two nice trips this summer. The first started at Colonial Creek Campground at Diablo Lake on Highway 20 - Over Park Creek Pass down to the Stehekin Road then west over Cascade Pass. The second was Stevens Pass to Leavenworth via the Icicle Ridge trail. This is an amazing hike over a couple of 7300' passes. PCT south to Lake Josephine. South on the Icicle River Trail then east on the Icicle Ridge trail. Factor you days for this trip on elevation gain/loss and not on miles.

Send me an e-mail if you want anymore info on thee trips.

Hey Brett - I'm looking at two packs. The Golite Jam50L at 30Oz(2012) and the UAL Ohm at 24.5Oz. I could go with the CDT but I need load lifters to pick some of the weight up off my shoulders. I'd willingly carry an extra few oz's for comfort a comfortable load. Depending on the time of the season, early, mid or late (ultra lite) my load for a 3-day trip varies from 23 down to 17pounds (this is for a solo trip). Either of these will be a huge upgrade over my REI Flaso 50 which weighs 2lbs 10OZ.

At $110.00 the price is right for the Golite.....

What do you think??
